Walter Edwin Orr, 84, of Flat Rock, NC., passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Born in Hendersonville, NC to the late D. C. and Amy Stepp Orr, Walter graduated from Dana High School then barber school in Winston-Salem NC. He also took electrician training at Blue Ridge Technical College in Flat Rock and completed truck driver training. He worked at several barber shops for many years, worked as an electrician for several years, drove a long distance truck then returned to his original vocation of barbering and owned his own shop, Druid Hills Barber Shop.  Walter loved the Lord and attended Mud Creek Baptist Church and Good News Sunday School Class.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Doris Helms Orr.  She preceded him by only six months.  He missed her very much and is now reunited.  He is also preceded in death by his infant son Clay Orr and his sister Margaret “Marge” Finnamore.  Surviving are his three children Robbie Jones (Dan) of Zirconia, Rhonda Kilpatrick (Mike) of Horse Shoe, and Jon Orr (Pam) of Hendersonville.  Walter was loved by his eight grandchildren: Eli Jones of Zirconia, Elizabeth Jones (Robert) of Mills River, Stephen Orr of Asheville, Logan Kilpatrick (Brittany) of Raleigh, Madison Orr (Kyle) of Dana, Dillon Kilpatrick of Asheville, Grant Kilpatrick (Hannah) of Asheville, and Jordyn Orr of Hendersonville.  Walter also had five great grandchildren: Reika Jones, Beckam & Kanyon Orr, and Reagan & Michael Kilpatrick.  He also has one niece and one nephew, Scott Finnamore and Jill Finnamore.

When Walter married Doris he adopted her family as his own.  Her brothers and sisters became his own  brothers and sisters.  Carroll Helms (deceased) and Judy, Junior and Margaret Helms, Brenda and Ken Allen, Linda and Harold Gilbert, Gale and Steve Nanney, and Thea and Dan Butts.  All of their children and grandchildren were very close to his heart.

“Walt” was a great storyteller and was always the person everyone wanted to be around.  His quick wit amused and amazed us all.  He was never without a comeback to a comment, the “comeback king”!  He enjoyed life and loved hunting, fishing, camping, and good old timey music.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Monday January 8, 2024 at Mud Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Oakdale Cemetery.

Jackson Funeral Service is honored to serve the Walter Orr family.
