In recent years, Ellazene Corn has prayed for the Lord to allow her to continue to live independently, at home, with her husband, until “her time to go”. On Saturday, January 6, 2024, the good Lord granted that request. Ellazene Crowder Corn, 89, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, suddenly and unexpectedly passed from this life to the next.
She was born at home, in Yancey County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Edith Crowder and was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Crowder; a brother, Donald Crowder; a son, Tony Corn; and a grandson, Colby Moon.
In the 1st grade, Ellazene and her 2 sisters walked across the mountain to Laurel Valley Church which doubled as a 1-room schoolhouse. In the 3rd grade, she moved with her family to Henderson county. She started at Etowah school in the 4th grade and graduated there in 1954 as valedictorian of her class of about 20 students.
She met her future husband, one Saturday night in December 1954 at Strawberry Brock’s drive in on the south side of Hendersonville where she and a group of friends had stopped while cruising Hendersonville’s Main Street. She was impressed by his new car. Their first date was to church service the following morning. She and Jim were married 7 months later in June.
Ellazene worked retail or manufacturing jobs on and off throughout her adult life while raising her kids. At various times, she worked at A&P Grocery, Belk’s on Main Street and U-Save Discount Store in downtown Hendersonville. She also worked at GE Lighting and at Taylor Instrument Company.
Ellazene’s life was centered around her family and her church. She volunteered in many ways at Ebenezer Baptist Church – singing with a trio of lady friends, sunday school teacher, church librarian, and vacation bible school being best examples. For the last 15 years, she was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church where she dearly loved her Good News Sunday School class. She was a devout Christian, known for her prayers, generosity and concern for others.
She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, James “Jim” Corn; a son, Rick Corn, his wife Chris and their daughter Alexandra Corn of Madison, Alabama; a daughter, Karen Childs and her husband Phil of Hendersonville; a grandson, Tyler Moon of Greenville, SC; three great granddaughters, Rylee “Annie” Moon, Zoe Moon and Ella Moon; a sister, Irene Jones and her husband Roland of Lebanon, TN; a brother, Bruce Crowder and his wife Sheena of Hendersonville; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Saturday, January 13th at Mud Creek Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Owen Duncan and Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hendersonville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, Ellazene would appreciate you making donations to the Christian ministry or charity of your choice.
Jackson Funeral Service is assisting the family with the home-going celebration and funeral arrangements.
