The Rev. Troy Eugene “Gene” Adams, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, died Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Elizabeth House of Four Seasons Hospice. Rev. Adams was 82 years old.
Born October 17, 1939, in Statesville, North Carolina, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean K. Adams, and their children, Dana and Kevin. For many years, Gene was in management for A&P food stores before being ordained into the gospel ministry February 2, 1975. He served four pastorates in Baptist churches in western North Carolina and southwest Virginia. He retired from the ministry and from the Henderson County Public School system in 2012. He is a 1957 graduate of Statesville Senior High School. He completed a course of study and graduated from the Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute in 1975. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in religious studies from Bluefield College (VA) in 1981.
Gene was a lifelong lover of music and instilled that love in his family and those around him. He could be found at Tempo Music in Hendersonville, many Saturdays (as well as many other days of the week) trying the latest guitars. He enjoyed many genres of music but was particularly fond of bluegrass, classic country, and the theme song from the James Bond franchise (he was a great fan of the movies as well).
He seemed to have a deep love and desire to help others, living out the commandment of Jesus, “…that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another (John 13:34, KJV).” Throughout his life he could be found under homes thawing frozen water pipes for a sick neighbor, cleaning gutters for an older couple of parishioners, buying groceries for someone just discharged from the hospital, etc., etc., etc. Caring for others was his true vocation and he made family wherever he went and wherever he was.
A Service of Remembrance celebrating the life of Rev. Adams will be at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, North Carolina this Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 11:00 am in the main sanctuary. The immediate family will be receiving guests and Gene’s larger family at 10:00 am just prior to the service. The family requests that all attendees extend love and care for one another by wearing masks while in the sanctuary.
Condolence cards may be sent to the Adams family to: 1101 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, NC 28792 or jacksonfuneralservice.com.
