PFC Luther Leru Rhodes was KIA (Killed in Action) in WW2 in 1942 and since then was a MIA (Missing in Action) Marine.
His remains were located and identified in August 2025.
After eighty – three years, he is returning home for a military graveside funeral on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 2pm at the Edneyville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Luther joined the Marines in November 1941 and at the age of seventeen, he was killed in action on October 07, 1942 on Guadalcanal, British Soloman Islands, South Pacific.
Luther was born on March 22, 1924 and grew up in Edneyville, NC. He was the son of the late Harley B and Lexine Merrell Rhodes Sr, He preceded in death by siblings and their spouses, Lloyd Rhodes (Sally), Marie R. Hyder (Leon), Velda R. Brown (Garland), Mildred R. Grasso (Sabastian) Harley B Rhodes Jr, (Margaret), Alice R. Reed (Earl), Marlene R. Conner (Tommy) and Frank L. Rhodes.
He is survived by his youngest brother, Marvin T. Rhodes (Barbara) of Edneyville and many nieces and nephews.
For the Military Graveside Service, parking will be at Edneyville United Methodist Church. There will be vans to take people to the cemetery as there is limited parking there.
