Astrid S. Ohanian (age 92),

Beloved mother, grandmother and friend to everyone she met passed away peacefully of heart failure after, many years with battling Alzheimer’s Disease, on Saturday, March 28 at Tore’s Home Assisted Living in Flat Rock, North Carolina, where she resided since 2017. Astrid was the wife of the late Paul Ohanian; loving mother of Garo (Sherry) Ohanian; Linda (Doug) Dolan; and Nairy Ohanian; proud grandmother of Matthew and Elizabeth Dolan, and Ezekiel Ohanian. She is survived by many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family whom she lovingly served and generously cared for always. Astrid was born May 10, 1927 in Cairo, Egypt, to the late Haigouhi and Artin Tozkonmazian. She came alone to the United States in 1958, working initially at the United Nations in New York City, and later, for nearly 30 years at the World Health Organization/PAHO in Washington, DC. Astrid was a talented woman with many interests – exceptional typist/secretary, fluent in 6 languages, avid reader, artist, stamp collector, and wonderful hostess who loved to feed her family and friends. She was proud of her Armenian heritage, serving the Armenian church and community in many ways. She had a strong Christian faith which she lived out by always praying for people and with her endless acts of kindness and service to others. Above all else Astrid was defined by her cheerful positive attitude, her generosity, encouragement and loving kindness to everyone she met. She was a blessing to all and will be sorely missed.

A private burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, with a memorial service to celebrate Astrid’s life to be held in Maryland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Armenian Church, 4125 Fessenden St. NW, Washington, DC 20016, or to Alzheimer’s Disease Research online at www.brightfocus.org.

Condolence cards may be sent to the family at www.jacksonfuneralservice.com or PO Box 945, Hendersonville, NC 28793.
