Samuel Mills Nabers passed away at Universal Health Care on May 8th after a lengthy period of declining health. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David Nabers.
Sam was born on March 23, 1947 to James A. Nabers and Elizabeth Cooper Nabers in Hendersonville, N.C. He lived in Saluda N.C. until he left for college. He attended Saluda School until he transferred to East Henderson where he graduated in 1965. He attended the University of South Carolina for two years before transferring to the University of North Carolina where he graduated from the School of Journalism in 1969. After graduation he returned to teach at Saluda High School for a year. He then enrolled in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he received his Master’s Degree. He moved to Hilton Head Island and worked for the Island Packet as both a writer and photographer. Sam’s true passion was writing. He worked off and on in advertising in Hilton Head Island and Coastal Florida and proved to be a fantastic travel writer. He traveled all over the world from Amsterdam to Antarctica and published numerous articles in travel magazines and Southern Living, He also published a fictional book named The Money Tree. Always a character, his quick wit and humor will be missed.
He is survived by his siblings, Alec Nabers, Charlie Nabers, and Ellen Forcier and a large extended family.
