Margaret Corinne Carland, “Corinne”, 92, of Hendersonville, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville, North Carolina. She was born August 13, 1928 in Charlotte, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Floyd McClure and Minne Vance McClure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Franklin Theodore “Ted’ Carland; brothers, Floyd McClure, Jr. and Jimmy McClure; and sister, Doris McClure McGinnis.
A native of Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Carland graduated from Long Creek High School and earned an Associate Degree from Brevard College, where she met Ted. Initially working in retail, in 1966 she began working at Oakdale Elementary School in Charlotte as a crossing guard, eventually becoming the principal secretary. Following a move to Hendersonville in 1972, she became the principal office administrator at Rugby Middle School in Henderson County, from which she retired.
She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Hendersonville, where she sang in the Chancel Choir for several decades and played in several handbell choirs. She also performed in the handbell choir at Pinecrest Presbyterian Church. Proud of their Scottish heritage, and always the artist, she was very talented at sewing, painting, quilting, and music. She was also very prominent in the Henderson County School Secretary’s Association, often hosting their Christmas dinners at her home.
She is survived by her son, Ron Carland, CPA and his wife, Kathleen, JD, of Hendersonville; her daughter, Dr. June Carland Hammond, of Tampa, Florida; three grandchildren, Miranda Barrett, and her husband, Devlin, of Arlington, Virginia; Dr. Tristan Carland, and his wife, Carmen, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ben Carland, and his wife, Megan, of Asheville; five great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Carland of Rutherfordton and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 24th at 1:00PM with the service following at 2:00PM at First United Methodist Church, Hendersonville. Burial will be held at 2:00PM on Tuesday, May 25th at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6230 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC.
