Thomas “Tommy” Florian Scherl, 66, of Hendersonville, went to the Spirit in the Sky on Saturday, May 22, 2021. He was born in Cheverly, MD to the late Adam Paul Scherl and Frances Hines Scherl. While growing up in Maryland, he attended St. Ambrose Elementary and Pallotti High School. He retired as a printer from Mosiac Printing of Hyattsville, MD, after 30 years. His second job was his ultimate dream job. Any given Sunday, he was charged with visitor locker room security at RFK stadium. The benefit was that he was able to watch his beloved Redskins from the sidelines for every game for 20 years! A true sports enthusiast, he loved all the local D.C. teams including the Nationals, the University of Maryland squads, but especially the ‘Skins. An athlete as well, Tommy enjoyed basketball, softball, and duckpin bowling. The consummate music connoisseur, he was prolific in air guitar and head banging. Tommy was also an avid vegetable gardener, especially tomatoes. While he loved living in Hendersonville, he truly missed his beloved Chesapeake blue crabs and oysters. Tommy had several serious health issues along life’s journey, but he was the ultimate come back kid and somehow managed to conquer whatever medical challenge was thrown at him. His family and friends watched in amazement as he won battle after battle throughout his life. He was a kind, tender soul who saw the positive side in everyone. He never made time for negativity and took everything in good humor. His favorite meal was a rare 32 ounce porterhouse steak off the grill at the tailgate party prior to Sunday’s Redskins’ game, but the steak may have taken second place to a hot, steaming tray of No. 1’s from any Maryland crabhouse.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ray.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Stone Scherl; siblings, Ed (Teri) Sherl, Frances (Dr. Jim Lewis), and Maryellen (Jerry Burney) Scherl; canine pal, Buddy and several beloved nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, June 5th in the Chapel of the Pines at Jackson Funeral Service and Crematory. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Blue Ridge Humane Society, 88 Centipede Lane, Hendersonville, NC 28792. www.blueridgehumane.org/donate/in-memory-of/
