Matthew Rankine Alexander, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, at the age of 91. A man of unwavering integrity, boundless generosity, Matt left an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew him.

Born on May 18, 1934, in a taxi cab on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Matthew lived a life rooted in service, community, and tradition. He graduated from Newark Technical College with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Matthew was a proud and devoted member of the Freemasons and a lifelong Shriner. As a Shriner, he was particularly passionate about supporting Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, tirelessly raising funds and awareness to help children receive critical medical care regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

To his fellow Masons and Shriner’s, Matthew was more than a brother — he was a mentor, a leader, and a living example of the values these organizations hold dear. He was known for his steady hand, kind heart, and unfailing dedication to helping others.

He was an active member at Rockaway Presbyterian Church, Rockaway, NJ. One being a youth group advisor for 12 years along with his wife Cate. They also hosted exchange students from all over the world throughout their lifetime.

Beyond his fraternal work, Matthew cherished his role as a family man. Preceded in death by his father Tom Alexander, mother Jean Alexander, and brother James Alexander (Pat). He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Cate; their three children, Tom Alexander, Sandy Alexander (Carol), and Deborah Alexander; six grandchildren, Matthew Alexander (Brittany), Simon Alexander, Lindsay Alexander (Brian), Harley Alexander (Desiree), Nicholas Alexander, and Zachary Alexander(Shelby) as well as five great grandchildren, Stone, Avery, Marley, Amelia, and Kit Alexander. He was a quiet yet constant presence in their lives — a man who led by example, believed in doing what was right, and always had a joke to share.

Matthew’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service held in mid July with Masonic rites to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Matthew’s memory to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

Matthew Alexander lived a life of purpose, compassion, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
