Lessie Irene Jackson Coggins, 101, of Flat Rock went home to be with her Heavenly Father on June 18th, 2024, and is reunited with her husband of 70 years, Rev. Raymond Luther Coggins. She was born February 4, 1923, in Henderson County to the late Dudley G. & Essie King Jackson, Sr. and was the eldest of 13 children.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by seven siblings, D.G. Jackson, Jr., Herbert Jackson, Ethel Hoots, Louise Hill, Betty Williams, Paul Jackson, and Faye Gray.
Lessie was a devoted homemaker, raising four children with Raymond. She always enjoyed visiting with her large family and many friends. She had a well-deserved reputation as a great cook, offering up pot roast and her delicious, creamed corn on many occasions. Her “fried pies” were always a huge hit during apple season. Lessie was always active in church, serving as a Pastor’s wife where Raymond was serving. Her piano playing will be long-remembered and was enjoyed by many congregations until just a few years ago. Lessie had several hobbies, one of which was tending her beautiful rose garden and flowers each spring and summer. She enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, and did so faithfully until very recently. Traveling may have been her favorite pastime. Whether it was a quick ride on the parkway for a picnic or an extended mission trip to the Bahamas, she was always ready to go at a moment’s notice.
She is survived by her children, Larry Coggins (Gail) of Greenville, SC, Kenny Coggins (Vivian) of Spartanburg, SC, Anita Helms of Hendersonville, NC, and Randy Coggins of Chesnee, SC. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Brent Coggins, Benny Whitaker, Janet Ervin, Scott Coggins, Laura Stallings, and four great grandchildren, Jack and Teddy Ervin, and Evie and Ada Coggins. Other surviving family members include her siblings, Maxine Banks, Eunice Lynch, Kay Kluge (Jimmy), Martha Lee (Mike), and George Jackson (Doedy).
A funeral service will be held at Jackson Funeral Service on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 2 PM with Rev. Doug Carroll officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hendersonville.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful staff at White Oak Manor, Tryon NC and to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills for their love, compassion and professional care during this difficult time.
