Virginia “Ginger” Coyle Houlton, 97, of Hendersonville, passed over into life eternal on June 22, 2024.
She was born in Schenectady County and grew up in Alplaus, N.Y., the eighth of nine children of Kenneth and Elizabeth Staver Coyle.
She graduated from Scotia Glenville High School and worked at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. After her marriage to Randolph Lewis Houlton, she devoted herself to her family, church and other volunteer work in communities in New York, Virginia, Connecticut, Tennessee and Indiana before retiring to North Carolina.
She was a resident of Carolina Village for the last 20 years. She was a member of Hendersonville Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. She was a longtime volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Park Ridge Hospital.
A natural athlete, she always enjoyed group sports: neighborhood football as a child, softball and volleyball as an adult, and chair volleyball in her last years at Carolina Village. She had a rich mezzo soprano singing voice that adorned many church choirs. Her gift of hospitality was a blessing to many, and she brought beauty and care to her surroundings wherever she lived. She loved flowers, and her smile lit up the room.
She was predeceased by her husband and siblings.
She is survived by her children: Elizabeth Houlton, of Warwick, N.Y.; Lewis Houlton, of Germantown, Md., and Sarah Houlton Sapio, of Wildwood, Mo., and a grandson, John Cubanski, of Nelson, New Zealand, and by her sons-in-law, George Cubanski and Frank Sapio.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday July 15, 2024 in the Village Hall at Carolina Village.
Memorials can be sent to the Carolina Village Endowment Fund, 600 Carolina Village Road, Hendersonville, NC 28792, or Habitat for Humanity.
