Our beautiful Mother, Mrs. Doris Anne Edmundson Hammond, of Hendersonville, went to be with the angels on July 2, 2022.
She was born to Mrs. Bennie May Garren Edmundson and Mr. Ralph Edmundson, of Hendersonville, on January 10, 1929. She grew up on small rural farms in the Fruitland and the Crab Creek communities. A student of Berea College, she was married to Mr. James A. Hammond for 64 years, until his passing in 2012.
While raising four children, she held a variety of full-time jobs, including The Mill End Store, GE, and Walker Hardware. She loved cooking for family and friends and was known amongst them as a fabulous home chef. Gardening was her passion and she always kept beautiful gardens of unusual flowers and tidy backyard plots brimming with ripe, tasty vegetables.
Mother’s downtime always including reading her Bible, reading the newspaper, reading lots of books on any subject, and listening to music. She especially loved classical music and popular tunes from the Swing Era, and she kept these on as background as she went about her day.
Mother had a megawatt smile, loved a good joke, and told us many funny stories about growing up on the farm. She loved her family above all else and educated us from a young age about many other cultures.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville for decades, until her health prevented her from attending. She also taught Sunday School to the pre-kindergarten age group for many years.
She was pre-deceased by her beautiful granddaughter, Katie Rebecca Levy of Seattle.
She is survived by: her children, Mr. Rixon Hammond of Atlanta, Ms. Deborah Hammond of Hendersonville, Mr. Robert Hammond of Hendersonville, and Ms. Elizabeth Hammond Levy of Seattle; her niece Ms. Rebecca Nicholson of Hendersonville; her grandsons, Daniel Hammond of Atlanta and Louis Levy of Seattle; her great-grandchildren Kai and Taj Hammond of Atlanta; her brother Mr. Thomas Edmundson of Hendersonville, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.
