Larry Owen, 79, died peacefully in his home on July 21, 2021 after a brief illness, surrounded by adoring family.
Larry is survived by the love of his life, Pattie Owen, beloved brother, Danny Owen, dear sister-in-law Debbie Brevard, his only daughter and son (in-law), Angie Owen-Killar and Bill Killar, and two grandchildren, Caspar and Ben, for whom he hung the moon. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy McKelvin.
Larry was born June 25, 1942, in Brevard, NC to Myrtle and Ralph Owen. After highschool, a supervisor at Olin Corporation in Brevard took notice of his work ethic and intelligence and helped him become a successful salesman. This allowed him to build a secure and very happy life for his small family. He eventually left Olin to begin his own sales company, Pinehurst Packaging, giving him the freedom to share the kind of time he wanted to with his precious wife of 55 years, Pattie. Whether spending quiet moments talking at the kitchen table, tackling a home project, camping in the mountains with friends and family, or driving cross-country with their sweet pup Zack riding between them, theirs was visibly and undeniably a joyful partnership and inspiring love.
Larry also cultivated strong and enduring friendships during his life. He was admired for being a great listener, advice-giver, warm hugger, man of his word, and builder/fixer of just about anything. He was always ready to share a laugh and engage in a good debate, peppered generously with “Larry-isms”. His daughter and son-in-law were among his best friends, and he was friend, father and “Papa” to all of their friends and their children as well.
A celebration-of-life gathering will be scheduled soon for Larry’s friends and family. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to The National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation at https://www.npcf.us/.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Randy Tryon and to the caring staff at Four Seasons Hospice.
