After a courageous battle, William “Poppy or Billy” Albert Demarest passed away on August 2, 2021, at the age of 77, in Zirconia, NC.
While visiting North Carolina from New York, Poppy met his caring wife, Mary Ann. As mature adults, they’ve been inseparable, taking advantage of every precious moment together. A story that both wished could last so much longer in this world, knowing that there is more to come in eternity.
He was preceded in death by his first loving and wonderful wife, Rosemary, of 39 years, his parents, Walter and Sarah Demarest, sister, Sarah Mae Gennardo, and grandson Ryan Vicente.
Poppy was a loving father to Suzanne “Suzy” Buono (Sal), April Hart (Bryon), and Tony Gibson (Joy). He also took extreme pride in his grandchildren Katlyn Vicente, Gavyn Gibson, Xavier Hart, and Alyssa Gibson.
He was brother to Fredrick Demarest, Richard Demarest, Marie Losse, and Barbara Guge. Poppy was remembered by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Poppy loved to ride his motorcycle, hunting, woodworking, and working with his hands. He was always working on something around the house or helping others. As a young teenager, Poppy played in the local drum and bugle corps. He was industrious, building a go-cart with two engines.
He was a proud patriot and US Navy veteran stationed aboard the USS Essex CVS-9 (Aircraft Carrier) as a Jet Engine Mechanic and served in the Navy Reserves. Poppy dedicated his life to helping others by volunteering as a driver with Disabled American Veterans (DAV). As a true patriot, he was always the first to recognize and acknowledge others who sacrificed for their country.
After the Navy, Poppy worked for the airline industry in the communications field for most of his career. This work allowed him to travel to Europe and South America. Known for his long stories, Poppy loved repeating entertaining accounts about food adventures and his Navy training.
