Mary Doris Stewart, age 79, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the beloved wife of the late Wayne Stewart.
Born on January 20, 1947, in Morton, Washington, Doris was the daughter of Lloyd and Nelia Smathers. She was a woman of deep faith who treasured her family and found joy in the simple beauty of life. She loved flowers, the mountains, scenic rides, traveling, singing, children, and animals. Above all, she loved her family and the time she spent making memories with those she held dear.
Doris leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory, including her children, Donna Preece and Jack Surrett and his wife, Janet; grandchildren, Jonathon Surrett, Nathan Surrett and his wife, Jessica, and Crystal; great-grandchildren, Felix, Aleister, and Prudence; and her brothers and sisters, David, Joe, Dee, Martha, John, Steve, and Teresa. She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Cathy and Lisa, as well as her five step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Stewart; her siblings, Hilda, Dan, Wayne, and Mark; her son-in-law, Donnie Preece; and her stepdaughter, Amy.
Doris will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her love, faith, kindness, and beautiful spirit will live on through her family and the many memories she leaves behind.
A service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Jackson Funeral Service. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Nelia’s Memorial Garden in Mills River, North Carolina.
