William Douglas Gurkin, 96, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 14, 2026. He was born on September 27, 1929, in Wake County, North Carolina.
William grew up in Bessemer City, North Carolina, but spent nearly all of his adult life in Hendersonville, where he built a life filled with family, friendships, hard work, faith, and many cherished memories.
He proudly served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in April 1950.
William was a loving father and a kind-hearted man with a wonderful sense of humor. He had a special way of bringing smiles to those around him and was known for his playful habit of rhyming his words during conversations. He had an easygoing nature, enjoyed talking with people, and had a genuine ability to like and get along with just about everyone he met. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, humor, and the simple joy he brought to everyday moments.
Throughout his working years, William held various jobs, including positions with Coble Dairy and FCK Feed & Seed. He spent the final 29 years of his working life as a salesman for Mills River Valley Agra, where he became a familiar and trusted presence to many.
William’s faith was an important part of his life. He was a devoted member of the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in South Hendersonville for many, many years. His faith and the friendships he formed through the congregation were a meaningful part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Emma Jean McGaha Gurkin; his daughter, Belinda Jean Gurkin Owenby; and his grandchild, Keith Gurkin.
William leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory in their hearts: his son, Kenneth Gurkin; his daughter, Rebecca G. Strother; his grandson, Joseph K. Strother; and two great-grandchildren.
William’s 96 years were filled with family, work, faith, laughter, and the many relationships that made his life special. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct 10 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1350 5th Ave W, Hendersonville, NC at 3:00pm.
