Marie was born on May 5, 1944, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to Elmer D. Capps and Belle R. Capps. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dennis E. Capps.

On December 23, 1961, Marie married the love of her life, Norman A. Burns. Together, for over 64 ¾ years they built a beautiful life in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they lived their entire married life. Sharing more than six decades of marriage, family, adventures, and memories.

Marie and Norman shared many passions, including their love of automobiles. They enjoyed attending street rod shows together and spending time among fellow car enthusiasts. Their love of travel and adventure also led them on many memorable trips and day excursions.

Marie was a woman who found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved the ocean, fishing, gardening, traveling, and taking day trips with her beloved cousin Carolyn and her best friend, Lois. She treasured time with family and friends and had a way of making the people around her feel loved and welcome.

Marie was a faithful member of Refuge Baptist Church in Dana, North Carolina, where her faith and her church family were an important part of her life. She also was a Past Worthy Matron of The Hendersonville Chapter #61 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a 1962 graduate of East Henderson High School.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Norman A. Burns; her sons, Anthony “Tony” Burns and Dennis Burns (Christy); her grandchildren, Savannah Roberts (Ty) and Brayden Burns; her great-granddaughters, Ellie and Anna Roberts; her loving niece, Denise Riley (Nick); and her great-nephews, Montana and Dakota Riley.

Marie’s greatest legacy will not be found in the things she owned or the places she traveled, but in the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her love of family, her appreciation for the beauty of the ocean and outdoors, and the many memories she created throughout her life. She and Norman spent a lifetime together, and the love they shared was a beautiful testament to commitment, companionship, and family.

Though Marie will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

The family invites relatives and friends to gather for a funeral service, Monday, October 05, 2026 at two o’clock in the afternoon at Refuge Baptist Church, with the Reverend Jeff Neelands and Reverend Roy Perry officiating. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital in her memory to support children in need.

A life well lived, a love deeply shared, and a memory that will last forever.
