Neil Leon Patterson, age 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ October 11, 2024. He was born in Grand Forks, ND on September 18, 1937 to Edgar and Elizabeth (Sasso) Patterson, and lived there the first 13 years of his life. His family moved to Canton, OH in the late 1940s where most family members lived in Northeast Ohio. Neil married Carol Louise Guittar on August 24, 1963 in Canton, OH, and they had two children, Karen and Randy.
Neil graduated from North Canton High School in 1955 and began his lifelong carpentry trade in the Army. He was a master carpenter and construction superintendent his entire career in Ohio and Florida. He was involved in building churches, restaurants, gas stations, hurricane withstanding homes and home remodels. His talents were deeply appreciated by many people as he enjoyed doing jobs even into his 80s. He was very generous with his time and building and innovation talents for the people he loved, and as a ministry to people. He was known as “Mr. Fixit,” and taught his children many construction skills while he was involved in many home remodeling projects with them. The family built a two-story house together in the summer of 1979.
He was a member of the Canton Grace Brethren Church until they moved to Bradenton, FL in 1989 where he was a member of the Bradenton Grace Brethren Church. Neil and Carol moved to Hendersonville, NC in 1999 and joined Mud Creek Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Hendersonville. He enjoyed being a member of several Sunday School classes throughout his lifetime, teaching himself computer technology, and being a lifelong student of the Bible. He was active in family life, traveling, bike riding, walking, lake life in Indiana and Michigan, and enjoying nature wherever he was.
Neil is survived by his wife, Carol; children Karen (Kent) Kauffman of Warsaw, IN and Randy Patterson of Hendersonville; grandchildren Reagan Kauffman, Evan Patterson and Ethan Patterson; sisters Sandra Cowing of Venice, FL and Marcia Clark of Mills River; and brother Steve Patterson of Massillon, OH. Neil is predeceased by his parents and brother and sister in law Edgar (Mitzi) Patterson, Jr.
A memorial service will be held Saturday October 19, 2024 at eleven o’clock in the morning at Hendersonville First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.
