It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Charles Menyhard I, who departed this life on October 12, 2025. Although our sense of loss is immense, we are met with the knowledge that he is home and safely in the arms of our lord and savior. He joins his beloved wife of 54 years, Marjorie.
Born in Budapest, Hungary on May 10, 1934. Nicholas emigrated to the United States with his parents John and Magda and sister Charlotte in the aftermath of World War II. As victims of Nazi persecution, the family made a new life arriving in New York Harbor on August 29, 1950. The family made their home in Englewood, New Jersey.
As a newcomer, Nicholas set to work quickly making the United States his home. There was never a day that he took his chosen country for granted. Soon after arriving, Nicholas joined the United States Army, earning multiple commendations. After the army, he worked as a draftsman while he attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He met his future wife Marjorie, eventually settling in Hillsdale, New Jersey where they raised their children.
He worked in both the defense and avionics industry until his retirement, working in New Jersey and New Hampshire. After retirement, he and Marjorie made their home in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Throughout the years, Nicholas volunteered his time in support of the Boy Scouts of America, driving a bus for the Local Drum and Bugle Corps and, in later life, as a VIP with the Hendersonville Sheriff’s Department.
More than anything, he will be remembered for his infectious smile and his naughty sense of humor and his loose definition of grocery store samples. His warmth continues to be evidenced by the many people who considered him a friend. His friendships were cherished and the highlight of his later years.
Nicholas is survived by his children Susan Menyhard Thornburg, Nicholas Menyhard and his wife Debra and John Menyhard. He is also survived by his grandchildren Emma Levy, Joshua Levy, Madison Menyhard and Nicholas Menyhard III.
