Richard Lance Black, age 96 of Hendersonville died Thursday, October 27th, 2022 at Pardee Hospital.

He was born June 1st, 1926 in Warren County, Pennsylvania; a son of the late Archie Daniel Black and Nellie Toner Black. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Anne Seely Black, son, David Black and sisters, Ruth Hedges, Patricia Williams, and brother Gerald Black.

Richard served as a Sergeant in the 84th Infantry Division, “The Railsplitters”, US Army in Germany from 1944-1945.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Clarion State College on the GI Bill and his Master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. Richard retired after a career in the Jamestown, NY public schools where he was the first to serve in the chair position for the system’s Mathematics Division.  He and Elizabeth retired to Hendersonville in 1984 and were members of St. James Episcopal Church. He enjoyed volunteering with the Friends of the Library at the Hendersonville County Library, Kiwanis Club, the Water Quality Survey Team for Henderson County, and built houses with Habitat for Humanity and Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC). His hobbies included canoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing.

He is survived by son Jay Black (Sherrie) of Virginia Beach, VA; daughters Lise Neale (David) of Scottsdale, AZ; and Ellen Wilcox (Dana) of Hamburg, NY; daughter-in-law Miriam Gilbert of Boulder, CO; grandchildren Kenneth Black (Kathleen), Steven Black (Deanna), Brett Neale (Lana), Cassie Neale Harper, Hallie Neale, Daniel Wilcox (Kim), Erin Wilcox, and Benjamin Black (Keely); great grandchildren Paisley, Skyla and Willow Harper; Olive Neale and Michael Wilcox, and brother, Bruce Black of Seattle, WA.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church conducted by Father David Henson, at a date in the summer.
