Barbara Jean Plemmons Glaspy, 92, of Hendersonville went home to be with the Lord, Friday November 29, 2024 at Pardee Hospital.
Jean was was the daughter of the late Foy Jack Plemmons and Elsie Mae Webb Plemmons Hill . She was preceded in death by her soulmate; Robert Carol Glaspy (Bob), one son Keith Glaspy and one daughter Denise Annette Glaspy, her stepfather Tom Hill, and two sisters, Mae Carter and Ruth Hill.
Jean was born in Leicester, NC. In the Sandy Mush community in 1932. She graduated from North Buncombe High School in 1950. In 1951 she enrolled at Blantons business college and started taking secretarial courses. During that time, she worked part time as a waitress in a small diner in Asheville. This is where she met her soulmate, Robert Glaspy. They married in December of 1953. Their marriage became a lifelong journey of 59 years. They settled near his parents in the North Clear Creek area here in Henderson County. This is where they raised their four children.
In 1958 she became a member of Locust Grove Baptist church and began teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School so she could have an active role in teaching her children the word of God. She was a woman of faith, strength and loyalty. She loved her family very much. In one way or another It showed in everything she said and did. And she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Even if it was something you didn’t want to hear. When things happened that were out of her control, we saw her deal with those challenges in a way that showed the wisdom she had acquired in her life. She was truly a wise woman. It was in part, by being a helpmate to her strong willed and hardworking husband, Bob Glaspy. But it was also because of her faith in God and His word.
First and foremost, throughout her life was caring for her home and her family. She did that work with the same dignity that carried her through life. She saw the importance of teaching her children how to care for their homes. Grow gardens and preserve the food they grew and livestock they raised. She also taught her son’s young wives as she did her own children. Her sons learned how to do many of the things that only women did back then, whether they liked it or not. She was an awesome cook! …Her fried chicken was the best! She was an amazing seamstress, making many of her children’s clothes when they were little. She loved working with ceramics and working in her flower garden.
Then came her cherished grandchildren. She absolutely loved and did what she could to support them in their endeavors in life. Jean began working outside the home to have money to spend on her grandchildren. She worked at the front desk of Carolina Village until she was well into her 70’s …not because she had to … it was also because she loved people.
We could go on and on about how beautiful Jean Glaspy was. But we also know too that Jean wasn’t perfect. But as we age, we realize, or we will begin to realize, that she did the best she could for everyone in her family. She loved them all with all her heart.
It is now, we ask, “What are we gonna do without her?” She is going to be missed by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her son; Richard Kevin Glaspy ,one daughter; Lisa Glaspy Smith and her husband James, one daughter in law Eleanor Glaspy and five grandchildren; Christopher Glaspy and his wife Christy, Amos Glaspy, Tyler Honeycutt, Luke Glaspy and her only granddaughter; Andrea Glaspy and nine great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held, Thursday, December 05, 2024 at two o’clock in the afternoon at the Chapel in the Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with Pastor Robbie Glaspy officiating. Burial will follow the service at Locust Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
