Paul Arthur Mason, age 76, of Hendersonville, formerly of Readington, New Jersey, passed away in December 2023 after a heroic 18 year battle with cancer.

Paul was born in Erie County, NY to his late parents Arthur and Wanda Mason. Boy Scouts and golf were his go to activities as a child.

Paul attended Houghton College and then went on to graduate with his Masters in Chemistry from St John’s University and later with a PhD in Pharmaceutical Science from Rutgers University.

Paul met Kathleen at Houghton College and was married in 1972.  They settled in Long Island, NY following graduation and then moved in 1981 to Readington, NJ.  While they had friends but no local church, they started a small group bible study in their home.  This group grew and eventually became Grace Community Church in Bridgewater, NJ. Worship music during church or listening quietly at home gave Paul great joy. His relationship with Jesus Christ was central to his life.  Paul served the church in many ways including as a ruling elder.

Professionally, Paul worked as a drug development scientist for Johnson & Johnson and later Bristol Myers Squibb before becoming an independent pharmaceutical consultant.  He spent a number of years consulting nationally and internationally, most notably in Puerto Rico and Pakistan.  He was invigorated by travel and meeting others from different cultures.  He also was fond of sports such as tennis, baseball, football and bowling.

Following retirement in 2019, Paul and Kathy relocated to Hendersonville, NC and were immediately welcomed into the Grace Blue Ridge and BSR communities.  These two communities have loved, encouraged and served in sacrificial ways during Paul’s final years.

Paul is survived by his family:
His wife of 51 years, Kathleen Mason of Hendersonville, NC; daughter, Amy and her husband Barry Schutter of London, England; sons, Paul and his wife Rophe Mason of Boston, Massachusetts, Tim and his wife, Sarah Mason of Scottsdale, Arizona;  sister, Wendy and her husband, Robert Ferns of Wells, Maine; Grandchildren, Nicholas, Quinn and Kyrie Schutter of London  and  Elias, Celeste and Everett Mason of Boston.

A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, December 27th at 3pm at Grace Blue Ridge church in Hendersonville.

Memorial donations can be directed to Serge.  Paul’s daughter and son-in-law serve as pastor and church staff to marginalized communities in London.
