Mary Rachel Barnwell, lovingly known as Rachel, was born on December 19, 1950, in Anderson, South Carolina, and passed away on December 29, 2025, at the age of 75. Rachel was full of life, faith, and love, and she leaves behind a legacy of devotion to God, family, and service to others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reverend James Barnwell; her son, James A. Reed; and her parents, Ernest Smith and Doris Taylor.
Rachel is survived by her children: daughters Virginia Purkey and son-in-law Chuck Purkey, Laura Parris Hensley of Greeneville, Tennessee, and Sylvia Parris Renfroe of Hendersonville, North Carolina; and her son, Ernest Sheppard of Hendersonville, North Carolina. She was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy. A special place in her heart was held by her granddaughter, Abigail Renfroe, who lovingly served as her caregiver on many occasions. Rachel was also survived by her sister, Janice Whelan, and her brother, Roget Smith, along with many extended family members and friends.
A devoted minister for many years, Mrs. Barnwell was passionate about spreading the Word of God. Her love for Christ was unmatched and evident in every aspect of her life. She was a spiritual leader, a trusted friend, and a proud grandmother whose generosity and kindness touched all who knew her. Rachel’s faith guided her actions, and she left a lasting impact on everyone she met.
She will be deeply missed, yet her family takes comfort in knowing her life was a powerful testimony of faith, love, and service.
